Travel Guide

Surfside Beach is a small, quiet beach village on the Texas Gulf Coast in Brazoria County — about one hour south of Houston. Covering approximately 0.5 square miles with a population of roughly 800 year-round residents, this coastal community offers uncrowded beaches, drive-on beach access, and a laid-back atmosphere that makes it one of the best-kept secrets on the Gulf of Mexico. According to NOAA Gulf Coast climate data, Surfside Beach averages 227 sunny days per year, and water temperatures range from 65°F in winter to 85°F in summer — making it a viable year-round destination. Here's everything you need to know before your trip.

Best Time to Visit Surfside Beach

Surfside Beach is a year-round destination, but each season offers a different experience:

  • Spring (March–May): Average highs of 75–85°F with water temperatures climbing from 68°F to 78°F. Fewer crowds, great fishing, and wildflowers bloom along the coastal prairie.
  • Summer (June–August): Peak season with average highs of 90–95°F and water temperatures reaching 82–85°F. The best time for swimming, but book your beach house early — weekends fill up fast.
  • Fall (September–October): Average highs of 80–90°F with warm water lingering at 78–82°F through October. Fewer crowds, lower rental prices, and excellent surf fishing. Watch for tropical weather forecasts during hurricane season (June–November per NOAA).
  • Winter (November–February): Average highs of 55–65°F with water temperatures around 55–65°F. Great for birdwatching at the Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge, which hosts over 300 bird species according to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD). Too cold for swimming, but beach walks and fishing are still enjoyable.

How to Get to Surfside Beach

Surfside Beach is approximately 60 miles south of downtown Houston, located at GPS coordinates 28.9455° N, 95.2930° W. Take TX-288 South through Pearland and Angleton to Lake Jackson, then TX-332 East straight to Surfside Beach. The drive takes about one hour with no tolls. According to Brazoria County tourism resources, this is the most direct route from the Houston metro area to any Gulf Coast beach.

The closest major airports are Houston Hobby (HOU) — about 1 hour away — and George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) — about 1.5 hours. A rental car is essential, as there is no public transit to Surfside Beach. For reference, Surfside Beach is near mile marker 0 on TX-332, where the highway terminates at the coast.

What to Pack for Surfside Beach

  • Sunscreen (SPF 50+): The Texas Gulf Coast sun is strong year-round. Reapply every two hours.
  • Bug spray: Mosquitoes are common near the dunes and marshes, especially at dawn and dusk.
  • Water shoes: Sand burrs grow in the dunes, and shells can be sharp in the surf.
  • Beach umbrella or pop-up tent: There is very little natural shade on the beach.
  • Cooler with ice: Stock up on drinks and snacks in Lake Jackson before heading to the beach — options in Surfside are limited.
  • Fishing gear: If you fish, bring your rod — the jetty and surf fishing are excellent.

Surfside Beach Rules and Tips

  • Drive-on beach access: You can drive your vehicle directly onto the sand. Stay on packed sand and watch for soft spots. 4WD is not required in most conditions.
  • Dogs are welcome: Surfside Beach is one of the most dog-friendly beaches in Texas. Keep your dog on a leash and clean up after them.
  • No glass on the beach: Glass containers are prohibited. Use cans or plastic.
  • Beach bonfires: Allowed in designated areas. Fire pits are available from local rental companies.
  • Jellyfish: They wash up occasionally, especially in summer. Watch where you step and keep pets away.

Where to Stay in Surfside Beach

Surfside Beach is primarily a beach house rental community — there are no large hotels or resorts. Most visitors rent a beach home for the weekend or the week, which gives you a full kitchen, washer and dryer, outdoor deck space, and a true Gulf Coast beach house experience.

The Blue Sea Star is a 4-bedroom, 3-bathroom beachfront beach house that sleeps up to 12 guests. It features two deluxe king suites, a 360-degree wrap-around deck with Gulf of Mexico views, 1 GB WiFi, and a fully stocked kitchen to whip up amazing meals. It's pet-friendly and just steps from the sand.

Grocery Shopping and Supplies

Surfside Beach itself has limited shopping. The nearest full grocery stores are in Lake Jackson, about 15 minutes away. H-E-B, Walmart, and several restaurants are all in Lake Jackson. We recommend stocking up on groceries, drinks, and supplies before arriving at your beach house. There is a small convenience store in Surfside for last-minute items.
